Moldova's National Library to benefit from grant for digitization on behalf of Japan's government

Chisinau, 4 March /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet today approved a decision on starting negotiations and approving the signing of an agreement on grant between the Moldovan government and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on the implementation or a project titled, Improvement of equipment of National Library’s (BNRM) digitization.
In 2019, a group of JICA experts carried out a feasibility study at the institution. During three weeks, the specialists selected the equipment needed by BNRM, to be able to buy it for the institution.
Presently, the Chisinau-based National Library needs equipment for digitizing the national heritage preserved in the library’s funds: books, newspapers, audiovisual documents, etc. For this, the Japanese government will provide a non-refundable sum worth about 400,000 dollars.
Set up in 1832, the National Library currently has collections comprising 2.5 million of material units in more than 30 languages. In 2012, the National Library of Moldova was awarded the Order of the Republic.
