Maia Sandu picks up 57.74 per cent, Igor Dodon - 43.26 per cent of votes - preliminary official results of presidential polls

Chisinau, 16 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today presented the preliminary official results of the runoff of the presidential elections in Moldova. Thus, after the processing of 2,142 (99.95 per cent) of the official reports, candidate Maia Sandu picked up 57.74 per cent of the suffrages, i.e. more than 942,000 votes and candidate Igor Dodon – 42.26 per cent, i.e. over 690,000 votes.
A CEC member, Vladimir Sarban, has said that the more than 1,631,000 electors participated in the voting in the runoff election.
According to Sarban, a maximal mobilization on all age segments, who participated in the polls, was recorded in the runoff election, with the most active segment having ages between 56 and 70 years. Thus, 8.4 per cent of those registered in the electoral lists participated in the age segment of 18-25 years, 25 per cent participated on the age segment 26-40 years, 25 per cent took part on the age segment 41-55 years and 10 per cent participated on the age segment of older than 71 years. The most active voters were with the ages between 56 and 70 years, with over 32 per cent of those registered in the electoral lists participating,’’ Sarban said.
Also, Vladimir Sarban said that the highest participation of Moldovans with residence abroad had been recorded. ‘’As many as 260,069 Moldovan citizens voted at those 139 polling stations recorded abroad, the largest number of participants in the voting ever registered,’’ Sarban noted.
A number of 240 national and international observers participated in the runoff presidential election, who registered 324 ‘’relatively’’ minor incidents.
Under the Electoral Code, the candidate who gets the largest number of suffrages is declared elected in the runoff election.
CEC has at its disposal five days to compile an official report on the tabulation of the results. Afterwards, during three days after the report’s signing, the Commission will present to the Constitutional Court on the results of the presidential elections, which validates the ballot. The candidate whose election was validated takes oath before the parliament and the Constitutional Court 45 days following the polls at the latest.
