Japan to back project on digitalization of Moldova's National Library

Chisinau, 20 July /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan cabinet, at a today’s meeting, approved a draft law on the ratification of the agreement on grant between Moldova’s government and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on the implementation of the project titled, Improvement of equipment of digitalization of the National Library, signed 14 July 2020.
Education, Culture and Research Minister Igor Sarov and JICA Director General for Europe and Middle East Takema Sakamoto on 14 July signed the Agreement on Grant for the project on improvement of the equipment for digitalization of the National Library between the Moldovan government and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
The project on improvement of the equipment for digitalization of the National Library will contribute to the digitalization and preservation of the historical, cultural and general interest resources of Moldova, available at the National Library and in the partner institutions. The implementation of this project will allow enhancing the accessibility to these resources for citizens through improving the equipment necessary for the digitalization, indexation and preservation of resources, thus contributing to improving the quality of public services.
The document will create opportunities for developing inter-human contacts through providing access to advanced information technologies in the field of digitalization of books fund.
Following the signing of the Agreement on Grant, the government of Japan will provide Moldova with a grant worth 400,000 dollars for purchasing four scanners, including one automatic scanner, one semi-automatic scanner and a scanner for scanning big formats, three working stations adjacent to scanners and a high-capacity server. Librarians will be trained within the project as well.
